LIEBSTER BLOG AWARD
It’s time for English! has recently received a Liebster Blog Award!!
"Liebster” means “favorite “ in German. Liebster Blog Award is an interesting initiative to promote small blogs or blogs with less than 200 followers. Through a chain of symbolic prizes, bloggers will reward their favourite bloggers in recognition of their blogs.

The Magic -e
When we add an 'e' to the end of a lot of words, it changes the sound and meaning - rid/ride, cod/code, at/ate... This 'e' is called magic 'e' because it changes the sound and meaning of the word.

Giving directions
This is a nice game to revise the way we use to give directions. The game consists of four parts but before playing, have a look at some common shops and places in town you will find on the map. Enjoy it!
World Health Day
April 7th is World Health Day and as a way to commemorate it, here you are a film. Click over the image below to be directed to BrainPOP site, and see this time, a movie about the human body. The movie is close-captioned but watch the video without subtitles first for comprehension purposes and watch it with subtitles later on. To do so, activate the CC buttom (closed captions = subtitles) by clicking on the icon CC on the lower part of the film. Enjoy!

Watch this video, listen to it carefully and try to understand as much as you can. You know maybe you need to listen to it several times but remember it is good for you. After that, click on the CC (Closed Captions) button for a transcript and listen again while reading the text.

INTERNATIONAL WOMEN'S DAY
On March 8th International Women's Day is celebrated. To commemorate it, this nice video gives you some information about some women's achievements and difficult women's life in the past in education, politics... Although there's still a lot to do.
This video also offers you the opportunity to practise your reading abilities. Don't worry about the vocabulary and grammar it contains and you don't know since the main aim is to try to get a global idea of the content. ... Anyway, you can stop the video whenever you need to work on the vocabulary at your own pace.

Shrove Tuesday (Martes de carnaval) is Pancake Day
En el Reino Unido hay una tradición muy querida (a much-loved tradition) de hacer y comer tortitas (pancakes) el Martes de Carnaval (Shrove Tuesday) es decir, el día antes del Miércoles de Ceniza (Ash Wednesday) que anuncia los 40 días de ayuno (fast days) -sin contar los domingos, por lo que en realidad son 47 días de Cuaresma (Lent) hasta Sábado Santo (Holy Saturday) antes del Domingo de Resurección (Easter Sunday).
"Shrove" viene del verbo "Shrive" que en antiguo inglés significa "confesar" (confess) ya que según las creencias cristianas (Christian beliefs) había que confesarse antes de entrar en Cuaresma, periodo que commemora los 40 días de Jesús en el desierto (commemorates Jesus' 40 days in the wilderness). Por lo tanto el Martes de Carnaval era para gastar (to use up) aquellos alimentos que no se podían consumir en Cuaresma y que podían echarse a perder (could go off): los huevos, la mantequilla y el azúcar (eggs, butter and sugar) con lo que están hechas las tortitas.
También son tradicionales en el Reino Unido las "carreras de tortitas" (Pancake Races) que, como su nombre indica, consisten en hacer una carrera llevando una sartén (frying pan) con una tortita caliente (hot pancake) y darle la vuelta lanzándola al aire (flipping it) un determinado número de veces (suelen ser unas tres veces) antes de llegar a la línea de meta (finishing line).
